Marin County
Just over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco and nestled between the Pacific Ocean and San Pablo Bay, the hilly terrain of Marin County is a breathtaking place to skate--in more ways than one. But despite the hills, in-liners will find plenty of trails suitable for all skill levels, especially around the flat areas of San Rafael.
Thanks to a well-established network of bike trails, Marin has long been a Mecca for bicyclists, so expect to share many of the trails with wheels of a different kind. In comparison with other regions in the state, the pavement on these trails is generally a bit rough, thus not always ideal for skating. But the scenery--where dense forests cover the coastal hills--more than makes up for a few vibrations underfoot.
The most scenic and remote skate in Main County is the Sir Francis Drake Bikeway connecting Tocaloma to Samual P. Taylor State Park. Even beginners can enjoy this mostly flat trail through grassy meadows and a redwood forest--and it's less than an hour's drive from San Francisco.
