Notes
Breezy Miller/Knox Shoreline will delight both novice and advanced skaters. Though it's not well-known as a skating destination in the Bay Area, it's a perfect spot for beginners to get rolling--and not because of the sidewalk that loops around the pond or the spectacular views across the bay. What attracts skaters is the large concrete pad the size of an indoor skating rink--or maybe even two. The pad is located between the pretty Miller/Knox Shoreline Park and a closed-off asphalt parking lot that also has excellent pavement for skating.
As for touring, an asphalt trail encircles the small pond where mallard duck families congregate. The paving is rough next to the parking lots, but it's in better condition on the loop itself, which is just big enough for lap work.
Experienced skaters (or those interested in practicing heel brake skills) can head up the short hill at the east end of the park. At the top of the hill, a sidewalk leads to Keller Beach close to the entrance to the tunnel. The pavement down the steep driveway to Keller is very rough, making it difficult to maintain a grip with the heel brake. Also beware of the nasty lip at the bottom of the driveway. But persevere and you'll be treated to some magnificent views across the bay from the two concrete overlooks at the edge of the park.
