Directions
From Interstate 80, exit at Richard Boulevard and take the first left after you pass under the freeway. This is First Street. Look for curb parking on the right while you're still off campus.
Notes
In-line skaters are not hassled on the UCD campus, which has more than accommodated bike commuters for years. You may find yourself competing with cyclists for pavement if classes are in session, but even then you can still find enough of your own space. There are also several areas where cars are prohibited, which makes the skating that much better. The campus pavement varies in quality, from fine concrete to asphalt to a pebbled conglomerate.
To get your bearings, look for one of the campus maps posted at major campus intersections (a good one's at A Street and Hutchinson, just a block down from First Street). As soon as you're on campus, try to work your way south to one of the asphalt trails on either side of Putah Creek. Watch out for raised cracks there, and stay in control when the trail becomes steep and narrow where it passes under Old Davis Road. The creekside trails are generally hilly.
At the west end of the creek, the trail loops around a pond, then resumes on the creek's north bank. Make a circle around the gazebo on the hill before heading back to the main campus area. The trail leaves the creek for a short way at the north shore; take the wooden bridge to the south to stay near the water. There's another diversionary route farther south next to Old Davis Road, passing under the freeway, but the pavement is full of debris and is better left to cyclists.
