Directions
From U.S. 101 45 miles south of Eureka, take the Weott exit and go west to reach the Avenue of the Giants (also known as Highway 254), parallel to Highway 101. To skate near Miranda and Phillipsville, take the exit 10 miles south of Weott between the two towns. Park on the shoulder near the downtown areas to skate the nearby section of the Avenue.
Notes
The Avenue of the Giants is a 33-mile-long road that hugs the banks of the Eel River and passes through the dramatic forest scenery of Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Experienced road skaters will find the two-lane passage through towering redwood groves irresistible.
While much of the Avenue's pavement is very rough, it's smooth enough for skating just outside of Weott and near the towns of Miranda and Phillipsville, ten miles south of Weott. The forest is at its most beautiful on sunny days, but this also means that motorists may not see you in the shadows when the glare of the sun flickers through the tree tops across filmy windshields. The curvy lane has no paved shoulders, so it's also very important to hug your side of the road. Listen for traffic and skate with care. In Weott, the best pavement is found by skating to the north of town. For both Miranda and Phillipsville, the smoothest pavement extends at least one mile to the south.
