Notes
Known for the wild variety of personalities (from kooks to street musicians to muscle heads) who congregate here, the Venice Beach boardwalk is the place to go when you're in the neighborhood. It is probably the biggest skating scene in the state, and even some Northern Californians are willing to admit that they come here to see and be seen. If you can find your own tiny patch of pavement in the midst of the dense crowds on a fine weekend day (get an early start), this is the perfect setting for strutting your stuff on skates. But you won't be the only hot wheeler around, because this place has been growing as a skate destination ever since it became known as the unofficial world capital of roller disco. And it's no wonder--with ocean breezes lifting the smog and keeping the inland heat at bay, it is possible to enjoy perfect weather on any day of the year. Skate north from the Venice Pier at Washington Street on the bike trail next to the parking lots until it crosses the sand to pass behind a graffiti-covered snack bar. Just around the corner, you will come upon Windward Court, also known as the Pavilion. Because there is a large paved area, a long ramp, wide sidewalks, and garbage cans to jump over, this is where all the action Is--where the hotshot skaters, skate dancers, and skateboarders assemble. It is also where the bike path splits off to a wide pedestrian promenade next to an array of shops. Skate up the promenade to get a real feel for Venice, no matter how crowded it is. Be courteous, and plan to skate back on the curving concrete of the smooth beach bikeway. Fresh air, scents from the many food stands, and the sound of boom boxes waft around you, and performers and wild characters complete the scene.
