Directions
From Interstate 5, exit at Richards Blvd., just north of downtown Sacramento. On block west on Richards, turn right (north on Jibboom Street. Pay the entrance fee and proceed across the bridge to Discovery Park. Take the first left and park near the trail access by the bridge.

There are many other access points to this 32 mile trail. We highly recommend you pickup a trail map available at the paid entrance kiosks (or the link below) and create your own trips.

The map shows the trail starting in Old Town Sacramento. However, the trail there is very rough and not recommended.

Notes
The 32 mile long Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail is one of the great trails of California. Named after early explorer Jedediah Strong Smith this trail follows the American River from its confluence with the Sacramento River to Folsom Lake. The western section of the trail that this tour describes is mostly flat and accessible to all levels of skaters. The pavement is in excellent condition.

We start in pretty, wooded Discovery Park. The park has picnic facilities, restrooms and other ammenities. The flat, winding trail heads east from the parking area and soon passes under noisy Interstate 5. It continues through a wooded area. Further on the woods open up and afford occasonal views of the river and bordering marshes. We saw egerts, ducks and other water fowl. There are occasional short ups and downs that most novice skaters should have no problems with, but be aware of other traffic as some bicyclists come around the tight turns above the 15 mph speed limit.

You'll pass under the Southern Pacific railroad and the Capital City Freeway near Cal Expo. On our last vist there was construction and a trail detour starting between mile 6 and 7, so we turned around there. However, trail continues all the way to Folsom Lake, 26 miles on! See the related tours for the western sections of the trail.
