Notes
Skate on the edge of the San Francisco Bay along the newly refurbished Embarcadero to see great views of the bay, the Bay Bridge, Yerba Buena and Treasure Islands, and the East Bay hills.
The sidewalk promenade that runs along the bay seems to have been designed with skaters in mind. Stretching for four picturesque miles from Fisherman's Wharf at the north end to Fourth Street near China Basin at the south, its wide concrete surface is prime for polyurethane wheels. Be sure to enjoy the water and city views from the plaza near the Ferry Building before you start skating.
This tour explores the south end of the Embarcadero, which is often sunny when the rest of the city is blanketed with fog. The scenery for the first half mile is dominated by the mighty Bay Bridge, spanning the waters from the city to Treasure Island and the East Bay. Unfortunately, this stretch of the Embarcadero can get crowded during weekday lunch and rush hours, so try to skate it on weekends or during off hours. Turn back where Berry Street meets Fourth.
If you're up for extending this four-mile trip, an excellent diversion awaits adventurous and proficient skaters a few blocks away from the water's edge. Cross to the inland side of the Embarcadero and skate down Brannan Street. Turn right on Center Place to reach South Park and start exploring the area known locally as South of Market. You can go as far out as 11th Street, a mile way from the Embarcadero, and skate the streets from either side of Interstate 80 from Market to Berry Streets. On weekends or when traffic has died down after work hours, you can skate to your heart's content. Return to the Ferry Building by way of the Embarcadero.
From here, why not check out the fountain in Justin Herman Plaza across the street at the intersection with Market Street? You'll find a fun hill and stairs near the Alcoa Building just north of the plaza, and the plaza itself has a variety of concrete walks.
