Directions
Take Interstate 80 across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco or Oakland (there's a toll from the Oakland side). At the center of the bridge, take the Treasure Island exit (coming from Oakland, the exit is to the left.) Follow the signs to the Exposition Museum. Pass through the main gate and park at the museum (on your right) or anywhere nearby. The island is also served by AC Transit buses.
Notes
Though Treasure Island is a former naval base, it is now open to the public, which is great news for skaters: the island's streets deliver rare, mid-bay views of San Francisco, the Oakland and Berkeley Hills, and the San Francisco Bay. The island itself was created from mud flats for the 1939-40 Golden Gate International Exposition, and many of the buildings you see today were built for the Exposition.
Automobile traffic is very light, so you can skate pretty much wherever you please without worry. Pavement quality varies from excellent to fair. Rest rooms and water are available at the Exposition Museum, which is open from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Picnic tables are positioned along the east and west sides of the island. If you do bring along a picnic lunch, pack a sweater or windbreaker, too; it's often cold and windy here, even during the summer.
