Notes
Even though the Stone Valley Road bike path must compete with numerous better-paved and better-connected trails throughout the San Ramon Valley, this location offers a pleasant in-line tour through pretty Stone Valley.
Starting from the park at Glenwood Court, skate west on the trail at the south side of Stone Valley Road, back toward the freeway. A hill on good eight-foot-wide asphalt makes for a thrilling start. The dedicated path disappears for a short stretch between Cortaderia Court and Roundhill Drive, forcing you to skate on the bike lane until the path/sidewalk resumes on the north side of Stone Valley. Alamo Hill Road is a good place to cross to the north side. For the most part, this path/sidewalk combination remains in fairly good repair, although it can be dirty in places. You'll skate past homes alongside the road, mostly hidden by trees or shrub-covered fences. After Stone Valley Way, within sight of the freeway, the wide sidewalk is replaced by a narrower one covered with grit and debris. It's time to turn back. You are not far from the Iron Horse Trail North here. If you continue on under the freeway, you'll find the Iron Horse just beyond Danville Blvd.
It's also worth exploring the many smooth neighborhood streets off of Stone Valley Road. A good place to start is Round Hill Road, near the country club.
If you want to add another hill to this jaunt, when you get back to the park, cross to the north side of Stone Valley Road and take the sidewalk down and back from Green Valley Road, which is the next block to the east. Detour through the park to get there as there are no sidewalks. Speaking of the park. There is a short (1/3 mile), but very pleasant path around the pond which attracts waterfowl of all kinds.
Dan's Notes: The first time I skated this, I was a bit intimidated by the fast downhill on an unknown trail with plenty of debris. But now that I know the trail and where the bad spots are, it's pretty fun.
